December Update

We have been busy since leaving our home in Nalerigu on November 2nd.  Joel interviewed in Amarillo at Texas Tech to be on faculty at the medical school there.  We looked at houses, as well.  8 days later Joel flew back to Ghana and was gone for about 2 1/2 weeks.  He enjoyed his time with Nate Bradford and many others while there.  In the meantime, we were making a deal on a place outside Amarillo.

As of now, we close on our house on December 21st.  We have found a school, as well.  We cannot wait to finally get settled!  The next few days, we will be at Disneyland with Bert, Nubia, and Jackie.  The kids cannot wait!

Stay tuned for more news!

Another Update

We wanted to let you know that we are coming home in early November.   There are many precious people here in Ghana whom we are sad to leave behind.  However, we continue to seek the Lord and simply believe the Lord is showing us our time here is coming to a close.

We are happy that several more long-term doctors are coming to BMC both this fall and over the summer, including our friends, the Coppolas.  This is encouraging to us as far as the hospital itself goes.

We were thinking about leaving in December .  However, when Joel looked at our passports, all three kids have an issue of some kind-needing new passports/new residency permit this fall.  So, we are planning for all five of us to fly home in early November.  Joel will interview for a job while we are there.

After about 10 days, Joel will fly back without us to Ghana to check on the new surgeon and a resident who will be here.  There is also a close friend, Nate Bradford, who is coming to Ghana to work at the hospital with his son during that time.  After Joel spends about two more weeks in Ghana in November, he will join us in Texas.

The hospitals in San Angelo have just hired and/or are bringing in new OB/Gyns, so we are looking at other opportunities for work for Joel. We will miss so many of you in San Angelo but look forward to this new chapter in our lives.

Moving back to the US will have its challenges for all of us, more so for the kids.  Our main focus when we first arrive will be finding a job, house, school, and church.  We want to get settled as soon as we can so the kids can start feeling like they are home again.  We thank you for your continued prayers as we work toward this new transition in our lives.

Blessings,

The Dickens

Update

We have really enjoyed having more friends here this month of September.  Two of our pastor's daughters (Katie and Abigail) have been here.  Katie came with her dr. husband, Scott, who has helped tremendously in a time that is pretty lean on volunteers.  Katie and Scott also brought their two children-nearly 3 year old Asher and 8 month old Sullivan.  Our girls have enjoyed playing with their children and Colt has loved having Abigail from his home town to hang with , as well.  It's sad to think they leave here on Saturday.  They have been real troopers.

A good group went with me yesterday to the Outcast Camp.  I'm wrapping up the story of Joseph.  I told the women the best part is what we hear next-when Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers!  These women, and those whose job it is to look after them, continue to need our prayers.

We plan to post again in the next few days, I believe.  We love you all much.

Two incredibly fun, godly American visitors recently left Nalerigu-Bethany Smith and Jackie Dickens. We throughly enjoyed having them with us here in Ghana for 3 1/2 weeks.  They arrived a few days after our return trip from the US.  We were in the US for over six weeks.  Jackie and Bethany left Nalerigu to go home on Tuesday morning of this week.  Joel and I took them to the airport in Tamale, then shopped for supplies in Tamale before heading home that afternoon.

The girls enjoyed time at the hospital while here.  We loved having them with our family.  Jackie is now on to her next semester at DBU and Bethany is looking forward to her next overseas adventure, in Asia this time.

We missionary families started school two weeks ago.  It is nice to have two weeks behind us already.  I'm teaching Colt, Abigail, and Annaleigh.  Having three different preparations, I'm reminded of all the time I spent both before and after school preparing, grading, etc.  The girls are both loving being at school for awhile each day with the big kids.  Colt is plugging along in 6th grade. The girls are Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4.

Thanks for your prayers as we seek the Lord, minister to others, and listen for His voice.

A Few Highlights

We arrived safely in Accra yesterday.  Jet lag is the operative word right now!  Joel is getting the oil changed on our truck at the Toyota dealership here in Accra this morning.  The kids are sleeping.  It took them quite awhile to get to sleep last night.  Even at midnight here, it was only 7 pm in Texas.  It takes awhile for their little body clocks to get adjusted again.

In America, I enjoyed so much getting to visit with family and a few friends.  I never seemed to find the time to update our blog.  So, here I am again enjoying the high-speed internet in Accra.  We'll see how many photos I can post before our kiddos wake up.

It was a blessing to be home for awhile.  Thank you for your continued prayers.  I need to work out a school schedule so I am able to do some teaching with each child.  We need to pick up food today before making the long drive back home tomorrow.

Joel's sister, Jackie, comes for a visit later this week.  She is also traveling with another friend of ours, Bethany Smith.  We have known the Smiths for close to 20 years and are looking forward to having both Jackie and Bethany with us for a few weeks.

I know we've not blogged much since we arrived in America.  Actaully, we've not blogged at ALL, have we?  We have been busy since getting to the States, for sure.

We have been in Colorado now for over a week and are enjoying being here so much.  Tonight we will cook a Ghanian dish for the group.  And let them see the jewelry I brought from the Outcast Camp in Gambaga, as well.

I hope to catch up on blogging soon.  We will see how that works out.  You all are a blessing to us.  Thanks for faithfully checking on us, praying for our family, as well as for the people of Ghana.
